Solution to query_posts(‘orderby=rand’) not working in WordPress

I had been wondering for a few months by now; why was it that I was able to display random posts in my downloads widget on my local server but not on the live site?

I was using <?php query_posts('orderby=rand'); ?> to do the job. The downloads widget on my website was supposed to display one random post from the download section and did so fine on the local server. But on my live site, instead of displaying a random post, it’d simply default to displaying the most recent post.

I did all I could and tried everything people suggested until I finally discovered, quite by accident, that it was the WP Sticky plugin that was causing the problem . I disabled the plugin and &rand began to work just fine on my live site! I was able to display random download posts just as I wanted to.

So, if you’ve tried everything possible under the sun to randomize your posts using <?php query_posts('orderby=rand'); ?>, and you use WP Sticky, then try disabling the plugin and check whether it makes your randomize post issue disappear.

Let me know if this this help you out too.

  1. Go to Control Panel.

How to play a .bin movie file?

Download the free VLC player – It lets you play .bin movie files in addition playing movies that are hard to play on regular media players… such as no sound but only video, or no video while playing movie but only sound. It’s been playing anything that is a movie since I’ve installed it. I came to know of it through word of mouth and am glad to pass it on.

Check out it’s impressive list of codec support and other features.

How to do a printscreen (prt scr) on an HP laptop

This is exactly what I was wondering today while working on a new HP laptop today. How do you do a print screen? Because every time I click the ‘prt scr’ button (it’s shared with an ‘insert’ command), the ‘insert’ action is done.

So I eventually figured it out. Hit the ‘fn’ (function)button located next to the ‘ctrl’ (control) button on your keyboard along with the ‘prt scr’ button to take a screen shot successfully.

Solution to Firefox Download Manager issue

A few days back, Windows crashed while I was downloading a few files with Firefox and later on when I restarted my laptop, I was unable to download anything using Firefox. And that’s quite a pain because I love the bowser so much, especially with it’s host of useful extensions that aid with web development. So I looked around a bit and and managed to find the answer at Mozillazine which says:

If files downloaded don’t appear in the Download Manager, close Firefox, delete downloads.rdf in your profile folder, and try again.

It worked for me. Hope it works for you too if you ever require it.
